A New Chapter - Solar Team Twente goes Rally Racing

4-03-2026

On March 3, 2026, Solar Team Twente marked the end of an era with its Reveal Event: A New Chapter in Waaier 2 at the University of Twente. The event represented a historic turning point after more than 22 years of solar car racing on asphalt roads.

A packed room of more than 260 students enjoyed an inspiring program that began with a look back at the team’s remarkable legacy, from the very first solar car, through bold innovations like tilted solar panels and partnerships with the European Space Agency, to standout podium finishes such as first place in the Solar Challenge Morocco and multiple second places in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia.

Alumni speakers shared powerful personal stories. Thomas Jansink, who was a structural engineer and race leader for the 2021 edition, described the adrenaline of leading the solar race in Morocco and explained how that experience prepared him for his current role as a performance engineer at Aston Martin Formula 1. Daniël Wonink, logistics manager and race leader for the 2025 edition, highlighted the team’s logistics achievements, including precise sea cargo timing and record-breaking delivery of the flight case to Australia. He also reflected on his role as race leader, making sure a team of more than 40 members worked together smoothly and efficiently throughout the entire race.

The core announcement revealed the team’s exciting new direction: shifting from solar racing on asphalt in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge to off-road rally-raid competition at the Rallye du Maroc. The team aims to compete in the Open Category in 2027, a class designed for innovative electric, hybrid, or bio-fuel prototypes. This gives us the perfect opportunity to test solar-powered advancements, off-grid charging solutions, and new battery technologies under the toughest desert conditions.

The move builds directly on 22 years of experience in efficiency, lightweight design, high-voltage systems, and data-driven engineering, allowing us to lead the way in sustainable mobility in one of motorsport’s harshest and most demanding environments.

The presentation also gave a picture of what a year with Solar Team Twente really involves: from brainstorming concepts and designs, to building partnerships with major companies, hands-on work constructing the car in the workshop, extensive testing, professional growth through networking and pitching, and the incredible thrill of actually racing. Attendees heard how a year Solar Team Twente builds exceptional skills, far beyond what you learn in regular studies, while creating strong friendships, solving tough problems late into the night, and making memories that last a lifetime.

The event closed with a clear call to action: applications for the next team (starting September 2026) are now open. Guests enjoyed a free lunch in the foyer, chatted with team members, took part in giveaways (including LEGO solar cars and a special rally-themed set courtesy of Capgemini), and explored old solar cars displayed around campus.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, your energy made the day unforgettable. The road ahead is uncharted and challenging, but we’re ready for the desert. Stay tuned for more updates on Mission Desert Rally!
