Performance Engineer (Strategist)

As a Performance Engineer, you translate race goals and environmental conditions like the race route and weather into clear, measurable vehicle performance requirements. You support technical decision-making by combining modeling, data analysis, and testing insights. In addition, you will research which parameters of the car need to be known and how you can use this information to make strategic decisions during the race. For example, deciding what speed you will be driving.

The experience of Job

My name is Job Nahuis, in 2025 I spent most of my time as the race strategist. This function was a bit different from the Performance Engineer but has many similar aspects. I started the year by making a model that calculated the effects of design principles and compared them to each other. With this model, we could base our design choices on data, like solar panel area v.s. aerodynamic drag.

Later in the year, I worked on a more complex model that was even more fun because it included almost everything that had an influence on the car’s velocity like weather, hills and angle of the sun to the car. This model was the base of my function in Australia, where I used the model to decide how fast we had to drive to be as quick as possible and what locations for our night camp were most suitable for an efficient race.

It was amazing to see during the first day of the race that we used exactly the amount of energy that was predicted by the model. It gives a great sense of satisfaction that the model really depicts reality.

In Australia I worked in a small subteam to determine every choice that has an influence on our race. It was fun to do this important task with this team and to share the little victories like successful overtakes and of course the big victories like the moment where we reached the finish line and became second of the world in solar racing.
