Lead Engineer

The lead engineer is the person that is able to see the picture of all parts combined. The car consists of many parts of various disciplines. Which systems go where? How are they connected? Which engineers are involved? How will it all work together? Most members of the technical team each focus on the details of their various parts. A broad technical interest is useful to dip into all the different fields of work. The challenge is to be involved enough in these fields to be able to assist in the challenges that go beyond that single black box, while maintaining the bird-eye view of the full car system. Using various systems engineering tools, you will be the man-in-the-middle who communicates within and maintains the interfaces between the various disciplines and make sure that a fully operating car is presented at the car reveal.

Together with the Performance Engineer, you will set up test plans to test the vehicle to see if it is up to the task of surviving the off-road adventure that lies ahead. You will also be closely working together with the Technical Project Manager to discuss the planning and budgets. Together, you will make sure that all teamwork within the technical team goes smoothly.

The experience of Tim

My name is Tim Woertman, and my year with Solar Team Twente will always remain one of the most special and challenging parts of my life. As Technical Manager of the 2023 team, I was able to closely witness the creation of our solar car, RED X, including all its setbacks and successes. In this edition, we managed all the interfaces with a trio in the "heads meeting": myself and the heads of the mechanical and electrical subteams. Together, we ensured a comprehensive overview and ensured that all the engineers could work together smoothly to create a perfectly integrated car.

Our car presentation was one of the highlights of the year. We were able to present what had become a normal thing for me: designing and manufacturing our own solar car to 700 enthusiastic people. Two weeks later, RED X drove its first real metres. A moment I will always remember!

In addition, I've had countless wonderful conversations with people across the country. I still find it incredibly rewarding to rekindle my enthusiasm for the project with partners, friends, family, and especially my grandfather, who always faithfully follows and reads all our updates. He's been a huge fan of the solar race for years, ever since he discovered it in Australia, and he inspired me to embark on this amazing adventure. Australia was an intensive but incredibly rewarding period. I look back on a year and a half of wonderful memories that I'll cherish for the rest of my life!
