The experience of Jorian

I am Jorian, and I was the Battery Engineer in Solar Team Twente 2023. My application was a bit unconventional, since I joined after being referred by a friend. Solar Team Twente was a natural fit, however, since I wanted to broaden my horizons and get more practical skills.

As Battery Engineer, I was responsible for designing and building the battery. I did this together with one of our mechanical engineers. This process was a true rollercoaster, with many challenges. After designing our initial battery, we found a new type of battery cell that would significantly improve our battery capacity. We were already halfway into the year, so it was all hands on deck to get it done. As a team, we overcame the various budgetary, logistical, and engineering challenges along the way. I went earlier to our race location for preparations, we had to design a new cooling system, and had many sleepless nights to get everything done in time.

The result was very rewarding. The battery performed perfectly for the entire race and is the most energy-dense battery ever built by Solar Team Twente. Despite the many challenges, I look back positively on my experience. I learned a lot, grew as a person, and enjoyed working together with my team!
