Technical Team

Aerodynamics

It is your job to make sure that the solar car uses as little energy as possible, by minimizing the air resistance. You will spend a lot of time designing the car in CAD software NX to then run the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations in Star-CCM+. This way, you try to achieve the most aerodynamic design for the solar car.

As an Aerodynamics Engineer, you will discuss with your teammates often during the design phase. Based on the aerodynamic behaviour, you determine the outer shell of the car with which you define the space in which the other disciplines operate. This means you will especially work a lot with the mechanical and structural design departments to make sure that everything in the car will fit and be optimally designed.

After the design phase, you will go into the production phase to build the car yourself with your colleagues from mechanics and structural design. In this phase, your focus will lie on the details and the finish of the solar car as they are very important for the aerodynamics.
For this function it is important to have affinity with aerodynamics, for instance by having followed courses on fluid dynamics. Experience with modelling, in CAD as well as in physics, and knowledge of simulation software is an absolute advantage. If you are also precise, have an eye for detail and have communicative skills, then you should apply for this function!

Are you curious, do you have any questions, or do you just want to know more about this position? Send your question(s) to m.vriesema@solarteam.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Mechanical Engineer

As a Mechanical Engineer of Solar Team Twente, you are responsible for all parts which can move with respect to the structural part of the car. Among these parts are the suspension, rims with tires, the braking system, the steering system and the solar charging configuration.

You work together closely with all disciplines in the Technical Team. The available space for the mechanical parts depends on the aerodynamic properties of the car and all the mechanical parts must be attached to the internal structure of the car. You have to discuss a lot to accomplish this, for example how to transfer the forces of the mechanical forces to the structural parts. You are not only busy with the mechanics, but you also give thought to the aerodynamic shape and internal structure of the car.

Both practical knowledge and experience in using CAD-software, as well as theoretical knowledge about the necessary technical design and simulation calculations are a must for this position. You collaborate with a lot of companies during this project. These companies help you with both the optimization and manufacturing of the designed parts. The capability to communicate clearly and have both mechanical and dynamical knowledge are very important.

Are you curious, do you have any questions, or do you just want to know more about this position? Send your question(s) to s.termaat@solarteam.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Drivetrain Engineer

While the battery and solar panel are focused around harvesting and maintaining as much energy as possible, the drivetrain transforms this energy into the driving force of the solar car. The efficiency of this subsystem is incredibly important as it is directly linked to the speed that can be achieved for the incoming solar power.

The drivetrain is fully in-house developed by Solar Team Twente, enabling it to be completely integrated into the solar car and tuned to the other electrical subsystems. It starts with our own motor controller (MCU), the most efficient MCU for solar cars in the world. This device nicknamed ‘Jasmine’ converts the energy from the battery and solar panel into 3-phase power. This is used by the in-wheel electromotor that has been in constant development for over ten years, resulting in a state of the art system that can make the solar car drive at highway speeds using the same power used to make a grilled sandwich.

Developing the electromotor is a multidisciplinary challenge, consisting of aspects in various fields such as electromagnetism, mechanical loads and bearings, thermodynamics, power electronics or automating design processes using software. Even aerodynamics can play a role! You can approach the drivetrain from all kinds of angles and you will certainly be greeted by a broadening experience.

As a drivetrain engineer, it will be your job to create tests for researching the drivetrain, design possible improvements or new versions and then build this with your own hands! To do this you will be able to build upon the extensive knowledge and experience acquired throughout the years of Solar Team Twente. In order to research the losses of the electromotor or motor controller you will be able to use our own motor test bench, where all kinds of situations can be simulated in a controlled environment without having to hit the road. The R&D and even strategic possibilities are endless with this test setup.

You will closely work together with the rest of the Electrical Team to incorporate the drivetrain into the complete electrical system, while also receiving advice and help from mechanical engineers for the production of various motor parts that have to fit within a small solar car wheel.

Are you curious, do you have any questions, or do you just want to know more about this position? Send your question(s) to j.dehaan@solarteam.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Data Acquisitist

Within Solar Team Twente, the Data Acquisitor’s main responsibility is the telemetry system used to control and monitor the solar car. For that, you will be closely working with our strategy and electrical team. Besides the telemetry system, you will assist the Electrical Team in writing and maintaining code for different microcontrollers in our car.

During the testing phase, you will be tracking down issues in our electrical system and with that making sure the system is reliable. You are also responsible for providing the strategist with the necessary parameters that allow for the best possible preparation for the race. During the race you are continuously monitoring the car to make sure everything works as efficiently as intended. You can control and read all the data from the car wirelessly with your own data-acquisition system that is able to process all the incoming data. All the important systems in the car, such as the solar panel, battery and motor, transmit data that is important for the strategist to determine the best strategy. Besides data from the car you will also provide data from the self-built weather stations that are located within the race convoy.

You will also be responsible for the communication systems within our race convoy that allow us to communicate in areas where normal communication methods are unavailable. For this you will have to set up different networks, including satellite communications. Within this function you will learn to work with CAN networks, analog- and digital sensors, programming microprocessors and development boards such as the Raspberry Pi.

Are you looking for a challenge and interested in deepening your computer science and electrotechnical knowledge? Are you an accurate worker and able to work both independent and in a team? Then data acquisition might be something for you! Programming experience in languages such as Python, C and C++ is a prerequisite.

Are you curious, do you have any questions, or do you just want to know more about this position? Send your question(s) to j.vanderschaaf@solarteam.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Structural Engineer

As a Structural Engineer, you are responsible for the design and construction of all the composite parts in the car, for example, the aeroshell and the internal load-carrying parts. These parts are made with the newest materials and techniques used in the composite world. So as a Structural Engineer you will mostly work with fiber reinforced plastics, the material of the future.

Most disciplines within the Technical Team have an interface with the load-carrying structure of the car. For example, the available space and shape of the car are strongly influenced by the aerodynamic team. However, there has to be enough space for the suspension, the steering wheel and safety aspects like the roll bar and the driver’s safety box. So, next to designing composite parts, you’ll work together with the Mechanical and Aerodynamic Team a lot.

Both practical knowledge and experience in the use of CAD-software as well as theoretical knowledge of the technical design and calculations are a must for this function. During the project, you often talk with specialists in the field from companies like Fokker (GKN Aerospace) who have a lot of knowledge in the field of composites and material science. Good communicative skills and knowledge of dynamics and mechanics are of great use too.

Do you get excited about working with the newest production processes and materials, and about designing the composite parts of the new solar car? Do you have knowledge about composites or would you like to gain experience in it? Do you want to work together with the biggest knowledge institutes and companies in this field? Then, Structural Engineering is the function for you!

Are you curious, do you have any questions, or do you just want to know more about this position? Send your question(s) to l.onland@solarteam.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Electronical Engineer

Within Solar Team Twente the Electrical Engineers make sure that the car can drive in an efficient and reliable way. To do this, you will build upon the electrical systems of previous teams, searching for new opportunities for improvement and implementing them. You will design new parts and improve the existing ones, all while making sure they work well with the already existing systems. You won’t have to do this alone; there will be constant help from former team members and technical partners.

To create the best car, we must be on the cutting edge of technology, which is why we design our own systems. However, as the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is over 3000 km, the systems must be very reliable. You will have to find the balance between innovating and making sure that everything keeps working during the race.

The electrical system of the solar car can be split up into four subsystems: drivetrain, energy storage, solar panel and telemetry. While they are all extremely important, the car won’t work if these subsystems can’t communicate with each other. You will learn about the communication between these systems, but you will also learn to communicate with the other people designing these systems. This means you will work together with alumni, partners and other experts.

Solar Team Twente has always been one of the best teams in terms of electrical systems, because all the electrical systems in the solar car are designed by our own engineers. Are you up for the challenge to further innovate the electrical systems? Are you ready to test your electrical knowledge in a fantastic project? Can you work precisely but also fast? Can you work with a team but also independently? Then you are the person we are looking for! Depending on your specialization within the Electrical Team you will learn working with software such as Altium or Matlab, communication protocols such as CAN, designing an efficient but also aerodynamic solar panel, testing your own electrical parts and much more. After a lot of work, you will get the most amazing reward: seeing the car you build yourself crossing the finish line in Adelaide, leaving all competition far behind!

Are you curious, do you have any questions, or do you just want to know more about this position? Send your question(s) to y.vanderbijl@solarteam.nl and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Race Strategist

Do we have enough energy left in our batteries to accelerate or should we slow down in case the weather turns out worse? Is it better to keep driving with our own strategy or should we stay close to the other competitors? How much more efficient should an electromotor be if it is 4% heavier than our current electromotor? As a Race Strategist, you’ll be dealing with these kinds of questions.

During the entire year you are working for that one moment: the race. You make lots of different models for the solar car in order to be able to predict the necessary power output for the solar car in different circumstances. You take a lot of different things into account: wind speeds and directions, solar irradiance, other competitors, steep hills and the surrounding environment. During the race it is your job to calculate the optimal speed for the solar car. Whilst the rest of the Technical Team is designing the car, you support them in decisions that influence the performance of the car, like the optimal positioning of the solar cells on the car, the optimal battery pack and the specifications of the electromotor.

After the car is built, you want to get as much information about the car as possible. As Race Strategist you are responsible for several large tests, for example testing on a large banked circuit to determine the energy consumption of the solar car at high speeds or testing the solar panel to determine its power input for different weather conditions.

Before the start of the race you are busy preparing everything for the race: strategic plans, internet coverage, different weather scenarios, the race convoy, optimal camping spots on the route and more. During the race, you are in the rear escort vehicle constantly working on different scenarios and trying to determine the optimal race strategy.

Are you a strong analytical thinker, do you have strong communication skills? Do you like analyzing data and making models? Do you perhaps even have some meteorological affinity? Then Race Strategist is the function for you! Experience with programming (C++/Java/Python/MATLAB) is a prerequisite.
